Amidst the fast pace of life and an ever-growing list of tasks, there is one quiet force holding everything together - your nervous system. It is the unseen anchor of your life that shapes how you feel, how you react, and how you move through your day. But prolonged stress has a way of throwing it off balance. When your nervous system is overwhelmed, it doesn’t just affect your mood; it seeps into your energy levels, your health, and the way you respond to life. You find yourself reacting more than responding, surviving rather than truly living.

And yet, caring for it doesn’t always have to look like expensive therapies or complicated routines. Sometimes, regulation lies in the simplest, most accessible practices. Bathing rituals, practised since ancient times, were never just about cleansing the body. They were intentional pauses, moments to slow down, to reconnect, to let the body soften and the mind settle. The warmth of water, the stillness it creates, and the sensory experience it offers all gently signal safety to your system, helping it recalibrate.

In the middle of a busy week, a mindful bathing ritual can help you come back to yourself without adding more to your plate. Here are some curated bathing rituals, in order, that I personally use. You can follow them as they are, or simply take inspiration and create something that feels deeply personal and nourishing for you:

3.Oil massaging- After dry brushing, I move into oil massage. I use sweet almond oil with a few drops of essential oils- lavender or orange, depending on my mood, and sometimes lemongrass. I usually prefer cold-pressed oil sourced locally- I get my sweet almond oil cold-pressed right in front of me from a nearby market, which makes the experience feel even more pure and intentional.

I start with my scalp, then move to my face, hands, and feet, occasionally massaging my whole body. Despite getting weekly massages, I still take out a day every month to massage my whole body myself; it feels personal, nurturing, and more connected to my body and mind.

4.Energy cleanse - Then I step into the shower, or sometimes sink into a bath infused with the same essential oils and Epsom salt. On shower days, I use my homemade body scrub to release tension from both my body and my energy. It’s a mix of ground coffee, sugar, pink Himalayan salt, and a bit of Epsom salt.

I keep this mix ready in a jar, and whenever I feel low, I take a couple of spoonfuls, mix it with my body wash, and gently scrub. It exfoliates, grounds, and energetically resets me; it’s literally the heart of my ritual.

5. Slow down: I spend a good hour and a half moving through these steps slowly, occasionally breathing deeply, without rushing. It becomes a space where I choose myself fully, giving my body and mind the attention they don’t always receive in daily life.

6. Moisturising: Once I’m done, I moisturise my body with soothing coconut oil or shea butter. Just like my almond oil, I prefer using cold-pressed, locally sourced coconut oil whenever possible, as it feels chemical-free, more nourishing, and closer to nature. Sometimes, I add a few drops of lavender oil to seal in that calm.

Extra tip - You can meditate in the bathtub or right after your shower. It deepens your connection with yourself and enhances that feeling of safety within your body. At its core, regulating your nervous system is about slowing down, about doing even the simplest things with intention and presence. Breathing deeply while doing these rituals is also a meditation in itself.

2. Dry brushing - I begin by lightly massaging my lymph nodes with my hands to prepare my body, and then move into dry brushing. It’s not just a physical step; it feels soothing and intimate. It gently stimulates the body, supports lymphatic drainage, and awakens the skin while subtly calming the nervous system.

1. Ambience - The very first thing I do is dim the lights or light a few candles, allowing the space to soften. I then put on music that matches my mood, sometimes it’s soft jazz, other times heart chakra frequencies. This is where the ritual begins, not with water, but with the intention.
